Different spotlight search queries needed in BE

Post by FredS »

Hi,

Im new to Bookends and really enjoy the app so far (I am a Sente refugee). I'm noticing that a search outside of BE in Spotlight for "free" will show the correct PDF in the results that has the word "sugar-free" in the file, but, in Bookends, it can't find "free" when even doing a Spotlight searchlight, but it can find "sugar-free". Is this just normal behavior?

Thanks.

Fred

I can reproduce this. Bookends is set to search whole words, and apparently the Finder Spotlight is not (sugar-free is the whole word, free is a partial word). You can search for partial words in Bookends by using the wild card character, *.

A Bookends Spotlight search for

*free

finds "sugar-free" for me.

Thanks, Jon. In my actual case the hyphenated word was a highway name or something that I didn’t know would have a hyphen. Something unique like “Main-Boston Road” and I couldn’t find the word Boston in BE but could find it from the Finder. I’ll submit a feature request that BE search have an option for partial words as well because who knows if I’ll remember to try wildcards in the future! Thanks!

The wildcard works for me properly. However, when the PDF displays, the partial word search works in the Attachments pane when I look for the word in the PDF once it's open. It feels inconsistent as a general search rule: Search "this way" here, but search a different way "there".

Spotlight search is it's own beast, not to be compared with any other kind of search. Bookends just submits the request, what happens after that is a function of the APIs written by Apple.

Oh, I thought this was something you could program on your side. Thanks for the clarification.
