Name conversion

Post by everett »

In Bookends names are sorted in the bibliography according to the surname and first name/initial(s). This can lead to an anomaly in the sorting order of the bibliopgrahy:

Smith, John A. 2003 Title of article, volume, issue, pages
Smith, John A. 2002 Title of article, volume, issue, pages

where the format specifies that the bibliography be in alphabetical order of name followed by chronological order. The order quite clearly should be reversed.

The problem in this example is that the second reference is listed in the database as Smith, John A. whereas the first reference has the name listed as Smith, J. A., leading to the erroneous sorting order.

This brings up my question: is there a simple way to convert thousands of references with hundreds of different first names to the format, Smith, J. A.?
