Bookends changes some text symbols

Post by Profjg »

I often import RIS files into my Bookends library. Bookends doesn't seem to like certain symbols, such as en and em dashes. Here's how an abstract from my library was changed. In this case, apostrophes were changed to symbols like Äô:

The importance of ‘whole person’ or ‘holistic’ care is widely recognized ... We aimed to determine how the term ‘whole person’ care is understood by general practitioners (GPs), and whether it is synonymous with ‘[w]holistic’ and ‘biopsychosocial’ care. [ThomasHayley2018]

Is there a way to prevent this from happening? I am sorry, I am sure my question has been asked somewhere here on the forum but so far I am unable to locate where a similar issue is discussed.

You have to tell Bookends what encoding the file uses (File -> Import Text Encoding). In this case, it should be set to UTF-8.
