Hi all
Hopefully someone can give some suggestions for this problem.
Thanks.
Cheers, Ross.

The issue with DOI hyperlinks in WORD (16.84) on a MAC running 14.4.1:
1) If I use Copy Citation/Copy Formatted/Bibliography directly from Bookends (15.02), then the reference in words is correct, but I need to activate the hyperlink by inserting the cursor at the end of the reference and doing a Return.
THIS IS OK FOR ONE OR TWO REFERENCES, BUT NOT A GREAT SOLUTION FOR 20 OR 30 PAGES OF REFERENCES, AS IN A PHD.
2) If I SCAN the Word document and create the references at the end of the document, then the outcome is that all references are correctly formatted in APA7, except for two things:
a. The DOI or URL is not underlined, and
b. The DOI or URL is not hyperlinked to the journal.
MY SOLUTION IS TO COPY THE DOI OR URL, INSERT A LINK FROM WITHIN WORD, AND PASTE THE DOI OR URL.
TEDIOUS!
I’D LIKE AN AUTOMATIC SOLUTION.
In APA 7, all DOIs need to be hyperlinked to the journal or book. So my problem should assist others using APA 7.
APA 7 and DOI/URL hyperlinks formating in MS Word
Re: APA 7 and DOI/URL hyperlinks formating in MS Word
You can create live hypertext links in formatted references. Please refer to the User Guide, p. 263, "Embedding live hypertext links in formatted references"
Briefly, in the format use one of two variations:
[descriptive text](the URL)
or
<<descriptive text><the URL>>
The former is preferred, but I just found (and fixed) a problem where the URL was slightly incorrect. Show here's and example you can use for APA 7th Journal Articles -- paste it into the Order field. It will create a live link using the DOI.
a. (d). t. [u14]. [u10]. f, {v(i)^v}, p–`.` <<$https://doi.org/$u17><$https://doi.org/$u17>>
If you prefer to use the URL field in Bookends instead of the DOI via Crossref, it's simpler
a. (d). t. [u14]. [u10]. f, {v(i)^v}, p–`.` <<z><z>>

Hi Jon
I'll try it today.
Thanks.

Re: APA 7 and DOI/URL hyperlinks formating in MS Word
Hi Jon
I used your script
a. (d). t. [u14]. [u10]. f, {v(i)^v}, p–`.` <<z><z>>
And the journals come out nicely/perfectly.
Do I do the same for Books, Edited Books, and Dissertations?
The remaining problem is that these references don't have the hyperlink showing.
Cheers, Ross.

Re: APA 7 and DOI/URL hyperlinks formating in MS Word
Jon, I have a slightly tangential question. I have a either/or syntax:
[$Link$]({$https://doi.org/$u17^z})
So if u17 is present use it otherwise fall back to URL (this uses ^ which IIRC is normally uses for p or pp). Could I change the link text to also change depending on whether u17 is present or not? I tried
[$DOI:$u17^z]
But both DOI and URL end up in the link text.

@rossadam
Yes, for each Type in the format you would add <<z><z>> wherever you wanted the reference's URL to be displayed as a link.

@iandol
The first example works because it's using a conditional group, which is bounded by curly brackets, { }. You need to do the same in the second example:
[{$DOI:$u17^z}]
FYI, you can have many conditions in a group, placing a ^ between each of them. E.g.:
{a^t^d^j^}
which means
1. output author
2. if no author, output title
3. if no author or title, output date
4. if no author, title, or date, output journal
5. if none of these fields have data, output nothing.

Duh, I should have solved that myself, thanks for the {curly} pointer!
Re: APA 7 and DOI/URL hyperlinks formating in MS Word
Hi Jon
Works a treat.
Just for completion and perfection: some google URLs don't do a RETURN in Word after the reference.
An easy fix is to do a manual RETURN. It's hyperlinked just not creating a space between lines.
EG
http://books.google.com.au/books?id=tkQ ... ce=gbs_api
Otherwise, your assistance has been wonderful, as always.
Much appreciated.
Cheers, Ross.
