Ignoring the English article (The, an, a) of titles in the alphabetization of works by same author

Post by mzumaeta »

I am wondering if there is a way to set up Bookends so that it ignores the article (without removing it) of titles written by a same author in the alphabetization, when producing the bibliography.

The output from Bookends right now is the following:

Bauckham, Richard. “For Whom Were Gospels Written?” In The Gospel for All Christians: Rethinking the Gospel Audience, edited by Richard Bauckham, 9–48. Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1998.
———. “The Audience of the Fourth Gospel.” In Jesus in Johannine Tradition, edited by Robert T. Fortna and T. Thatcher, 101–11. Louisville: Westminster John Knox, 2001.

What the SBL2 handbook requires is:

Bauckham, Richard. “The Audience of the Fourth Gospel.” In Jesus in Johannine Tradition, edited by Robert T. Fortna and T. Thatcher, 101–11. Louisville: Westminster John Knox, 2001
———. “For Whom Were Gospels Written?” In The Gospel for All Christians: Rethinking the Gospel Audience, edited by Richard Bauckham, 9–48. Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1998.

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I think this is what you want. In the format, tick the "Use Ignore List for " -> Title (the ignore list is in Settings, and contains The, a, and an).

Jon, how about titles of the same author that are separated by comas? For example what Bookends is outputting is the following:

Sinclair, John. “Corpus Typology—A Framework for Classification.” In Studies in Anglistics,
edited by G. Melchers and B. Warren, 17–33. Stockholm: Almqvist and Wiksell, 1995.

———. Corpus, Concordance, Collocation. Describing English Language. Oxford: Oxford
University Press, 1991.

However, SBL2 requires that it be the reverse order:

Sinclair, John. Corpus, Concordance, Collocation. Describing English Language. Oxford: Oxford
University Press, 1991.

———. “Corpus Typology—A Framework for Classification.” In Studies in Anglistics,
edited by G. Melchers and B. Warren, 17–33. Stockholm: Almqvist and Wiksell, 1995.

Thank you in advance!

Have you set the sort to Author, Year, Title in the format? Or it is only Author, Title?

Check the date field in those two references. It should contain only the year, not other information such as month. If they only contain the year, please contact support@sonnysoftware.com
