Importing first author only

Post by everett »

Can anyone suggest a method to import the first author only into one of the user fields? I also want to keep all of the authors in the author field. It appears that once all authors are imported, the parsing engine doesn't want to go back and have another go at extracting the first author from the AU field in Web of Science. The rationale for this little exercise is to be able to sort references according to first author only, instead of all of the authors.

Any ideas, anyone?
David.

You can't do that. But formats do give you the option to sort by 1st Author, Date, Other Authors, which may be satisfactory.

Thanks for the reply, Jon. I would like to be able to sort authors in the reference list window according to first author, which is not possible at present. All of my (approx. 50) publications are listed according to alphabetical order of all of the authors, leading to a very messy list where papers are seemingly in random chronological order. I'd like to be able to see how many papers I've published in a given year at a glance, without having to perform a search.

Would you please consider this request for a future version?
David.

If you have the list view sorted automatically, it is sorted by authors (all) and date. If you click on a header, it is sorted just by that field (which is a sort by the info in that field, first author, all authors, whatever you have chosen to display in Preferences). So this sort would not lend itself to what you want to do.

An alternative would be to create a format that sorted by first author and date (which is what you want) and use the View Formatted pane to see them sorted in that way.
