I am using a database that doesn not have a filter in Bookends (Bibliography of the History of Art (BHA)-- by RLG Eureka). They have an "export to database manager" option, in which they give 4 choices of format: ReferenceWorks, Endnote, Procite, and Reference Manager.
I exported using the Endnote format, and it yields a purl file. I resaved it as a text file. I made a custom filter based on its tags, following the User Guide instructions to be sure the tags match (case sensitive, with spaces and dashes where they should be). It isn't working. this is the first custom filter I have made, so I am sure there are a lot of possible errors I have made, but here are some of the things I am unsure about:
a) BHA separates keywords by a return and a new KW tag, i.e.
KW - Painting
KW - United States
the filter manager asks me how Keywords are separated-- how should I answer that?
b) BHA does not use page range, but instead has a separate tag for start page and end page:
SP - 503
EP - 528
I designed the filter so it looks like this:
SP -, EP - Pages
I know this is probably not going to work, right?
c) finally, the reason I want to import things from this database in the first place is because they include books, chapters of books, and journal articles all in the same database. But that seems to make it hard to import into Bookends because there are multiple title fields, like:
TY - CHAP
A1 - Cikovsky, Nicolai.
T1 - Democratic illusionism
T2 - America : the new world in 19th-century painting
I'm not sure where to put these two different title tags.
any suggestions? I know there are many possible sites of screw-up here on my part...
import question
wait, I enthused too soon.. there is one kind of citation I can't get to import quite right in the RIS format.
There are book chapters in this database, e.g.
TY - CHAP
A1 - Cikovsky, Nicolai.
T1 - Democratic illusionism
T2 - America : the new world in 19th-century painting
PB - Munich, London, New York, Prestel, 1999, p. 33-41
where T1 is the chapter title and T2 is the book title. I don't see a way to add a tag that will import to the "Book Title" field when there is a chapter title.
thanks in advance

Yes, the filters do not do conditional imports (if...then...). But my guess is that journal articles rarely have T2. So edit the filter to put T2 into the Vol(Issue) field -- that's the field used by Book Chapters for Book Title.
That's what I meant when I wrote that you might have to edit the default filter if it doesn't exactly fit your needs.
