me too
I'm also getting the run-time error 53 when I try to scan a document. I don't see anything in the readme file about this. The plug-in is in the Office folder and the template is in the start up folder. I'm using Office 11.2 under OS X 10.4.7 and BE 9.0.6.
The template should be in Startup -> Word.
This is from the Read Me:
(3) Why doesn't the Word X Bookends add-in work?
When you first try to use Bookends with the Word X add-in, if you get the error message
Run-time error '53': File not found: Bookends Word X Add-in
it probably means that the add-in is not in the proper folder. It must be in the Microsoft Office X:Office folder (not the Startup:Word folder, which is where the Word Classic add-in should be).
The error message
Run-time error '5': Invalid procedure call or argument
may indicate a problem with privileges in OS X. Logging out (under the Apple menu) and logging back in may take care of this problem.
This error may also indicate that Word is not able to communicate with Bookends via AppleEvents. Launch Bookends by double-clicking on a database rather than clicking on the application icon in the dock. If that doesn't solve the problem, sometimes it can be resolved by dragging Bookends to the Finder, dropping it on the desktop, and then dragging it back to the Bookends folder. If this also fails, drag the Bookends application to the desktop and then relaunch the Finder (Option-Command-Escape, then select Finder and click on the Relaunch button). These maneuvers sometimes force the Finder to recognize Bookends, and may restore the ability of Word X to communicate with Bookends.
If all manipulations fail, trash Bookends 9 and Bookends 9 Preferences and then empty the trash. Download Bookends 9 again and drag the Bookends Folder to your Applications folder (make sure that any databases, formats, filters, etc. that you may have created or modified are moved somewhere else first). This has been reported to fix the problem.
