Problem with "View formatted"

I don't know what happened but after opening BookEnds today, suddenly all references are shown with HTML-commands in the "view formatted" window in BookEnds, such as this:

What could cause such nasty behavior?

Either the selection of a format that contains this HTML markup or the choice to output your bibliography formatted as HTML. Check 'Bibliography Formatter' in the 'Biblio' menu of Bookends.

Would it be possible to indicate the selected format & output style (plain, styled, HTML) in the list view window when the 'view formatted' field is closed?

Use Biblio -> Bibliography Formatter and set the output back to styled text, then click Set Default.
