Bookends and Pages

Post by Francis »

Hi! I wanted to know if anyone can help me to find a way to scan iWork 06 Pages' documents.
When I try to scan it from Bookends, after the "scan" dialogue box, an error message informs me that Bookends application closed unexpectedly.
Thanks...

Try saving it as RTF first, then scan that. If you still have problems when you do that, please contact tech support directly.

Francis, there has been a fair amount of discussion on this in other posts

make sure you have no graphics in the pages document, as BE cant scan rtfd, only rtf

Will Bookends ever be able to scan a Pages document with figures, or is this a non-issue as far as Sunny Software is concerned. I am a refugee from FrameMaker and EndNote, and am looking for a wordprocessor that handles figures better than MS Word (I use lots of figures in my documents), and a bibliography application that is better than EndNote. I was giving Pages/Bookends a try, but if Bookends is never going to fully support Pages then I'll move on to some other combination.

Thanks,

Greg

Who knows what the future holds. But at the moment Apple doesn't provide a way to interact reciprocally with Pages (i.e. plugins). We'll see what happens with iWork 2007 (or whatever it's called). Hopefully they would at least provide reasonable rtf export. Until something changes, then, Bookends may not be for you.

I know that I have sent probably a dozen comments to Apple regarding this issue and most of you have as well, but it is whack to make two documents in Pages (one of text and one of figures), then to save the text to Pages document as a Word file, open in Word and run Bookends, re-load into Pages and then add the figures. In the words of Rodney King "cant we all just get along"?

Jon - what do you suggest us Pages and Bookends lovers do to help your effort to meld these programs other than e-mailing and posting of the Pages discussion boards?

If I know, I'd tell you. Apple has to recognize there is a need for this sort of thing for professional/academic use of Pages. Rumors are that Pages 3 will pay more attention to the word processing (rather than graphic) side of the application, so perhaps this will happen. Keeping those cards and letters pouring in can't hurt...

Jon,

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll add my voice to those asking Apple to improve Pages and make it play nice with others. In the meantime I'll do the old shuffle out to Word for the bibliography and back into Pages for the figures. It looks like Bookends will do its part better than the last few versions of EndNote.

Thanks,

Yes, Jon, thanks SO MUCH for all your help! I hate to think of Apple as a nonresponsive monolithic monochromic company like their major competitor, but it would seem that their priorities are askew.

Another sad thing with respect to Pages is that I drafted a thread on the Pages discussion board about approaching Apple as a unified group of people with respect to this and an issue with Pages being slow. A day later the post was removed by the administrators and they won’t tell me why. I was not mean but very diplomatic and they trashed the entire thread (with 10 replies)!

Sounds like a certain government of a certain country I know.
