bib & doc options

Post by tom »

just a detail concerning:

use "et al." if >... authors in the bib & doc options

is it possible to make "et al." a custom field in a next release. Actually I use "et al" but without period...

Hi Tom!

I hear you. Generally I think all elements should be as customizable as possible, and even if "et al." needs a period in order to be 100 % correct, it would be nice, if you could write anything, you want.
In my case, I would like to be able to use the Danish version of "et al.", which in fact comes in two equally correct version: "mfl." or m.fl.".

Right. "et al" is incorrect (al is an abbreviation of alia).

Making things customizable is often a good thing, but not at the expense of complexity, especially if it is a rarely used options. Note that Bookends 8 now lets you specify what to output between two others in a citation, styles for number citations, etc., none of which were customizable in Bookends 7.

I'd like to get some idea of how many people want this flexibility with et al. (and how important it is to folks who do want it).

In Germany, "u.a." (und andere) can also used instead of "et al." I would guess that many non-english speaking countries will have other abbreviations for this case too.

The negative impact on the UI's complexity doesn't seem to be overwhelming in this case IMO: there already is an extra field for handling "et. al"-related stuff, so that the only thing that would change in the UI is that part of the UI changes to a text field?

edit: An afterthought: I would also guess that you might get more international customers now that it is possible to change the "and" for multiple authors to other values. For me that was the dealbreaker that kept me from really wanting to use Bookends…

Yes, that is what I was thinking, too.
