File attachment bug

Using BE 9.1, I am running into an odd error when trying to attach PDFs to new references. (I've been able to do this without a hitch in the past.) I can create the references and enter data into them without any problem. I can bring up the dialog box for attaching a file, and select a file. But when I then click on the file attachment pop-up in the ref detail window, I see where the file name should be a long string - 30 or 40 chars? - of Asian text interspersed with some random junk text. If I select this long string get an error that the file cannot be located.

I tried rebuilding the database, but got either this same error, or a different condition in which nothing happens at all after selecting the attached file. Help?
