Author-less citations

Post by noumenal »

I can't seem to find anything about this in the user guide, so I was wondering if someone might be able to help.

I am using a customised version of the MHRA format. In a footnote, I want to refer to a book, but using a fragmented citation. Inserting a citation would ordinarily produce something like this: <Joe Bloggs, Title of Book (City: Publisher, Date)>. However, I want to say "As Joe Bloggs observes in his <Title of Book (City: Publisher, Date)>". Is it possible to split the citation up in this way?

I am using Bookends 9.1 and Mellel 2.1.2.

Thanks in advance for any help.

You could create a reference entry with a new Type (maybe "Cite No Author" or something) and then cite it this way:

As Joe Bloggs observes in his {citation}...

Alternatively, if you know you are going to stick with MHRA, you could drag and drop the formatted citation where you want it and just delete Joe Bloggs.

Thanks, Jon, for your quick response. I thought about that - but (a) would it not result in a duplicate entry in the bibliography? and (b) it seems like a rather inelegant way of solving the problem.

Perhaps it is only in the humanities that such a function would be useful (in fact, not only useful, but potentially very frequently used), but I see it as fitting in quite nicely with the use of % which makes the citation display only the date or ! to exclude it completely (I presume this isn't just a Mellel feature). Is there room for another modifier, which would remove the author?

In this case, I'm sticking with MHRA for this piece so I'm happy to enter it manually, but it seems like a good opportunity for improvement of the software.

Certainly it's possible something like that could be added.

Thanks, Jon. It would be really great if that feature turns up someday. Keep up the good work!
