Problem with attachments

Post by macmelo »

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing a problem when adding attachments... I'll try to describe what happens:

1. The problem happens with several PDF files that were already inserted and (automatically) renamed by Bookends when I was using the software in "DEMO" mode... Since I was just playing around with the software, and not doing anything "serious", I didn't bother to copy/import the database I was building... The attachments, however, are very important to me and I'll re-add them to the new database.

2. Currently, the files are named with the standard "Author + Year" format... However, as many of these articles had the same authors and years, there are some files that are names with "Author + Year + Random number"... This is fine and I don't think any problem should come from this, right?

3. These PDF files are in a 2nd internal HD (not the system disk) and my Bookends attachment folder is in its default location (Documents/Bookends/Attachments)

WELL... NOW THE PROBLEM:

4. If the first attachment I add to the database from ANY combination of "Author + Year" is one of those with the random number in the file name, the file IS moved to the Attachments folder but ISN'T listed in the Attachment inspector... Ah, and no renaming happens, even though the checkbox is selected...
When this happens, I have to open the Attachments folder via finder and "re-add" the file... As far as I do that, everything is fine...

5. If the first attachment I add is one without the random number in the filename, everything goes fine, and every other attachment for that particular combination of author + year is added without a glitch...

I don't know if I made myself clear...

For example:

For Tay et al 2005, everything goes ok if I add the attachments in the following sequence:
Tay et al 2005.pdf
Tay et al 2005 8967.pdf
Tay et al 2005 8900.pdf

... but if I add them in the following sequence, I got the issue I described:
Tay et al 2005 8900.pdf
Tay et al 2005 8967.pdf
Tay et al 2005.pdf

Before anyone asks WHY WOULD I ADD THEM IN THE WRONG order, if this is happening:
I have a lot of these PDFs in several locations of several HDs and it's not that easy to get them all together, 'cause since the files were previously renamed by Bookends (in several different databases), there are probably several files with the exact same name but with different content...

Besides, this does not seem to be the normal / expected behaviour of the software, so I decided to report it...

Best regards,
MacMelo

Yes, I see this behavior. It only happens under some very specific circumstances, and as far as I can see may reflect a bug in the OS file handling code. I'll see if I can come up with a workaround.

I'm pretty sure it's fixed (it is in my tests, anyway). Check it out when the update is released.

Wow... I know it's a cliche to compliment you for your quick responses, but that one was ridiculously fast... Impressive
