In my opinion Notebook by Circus Pony Software is better than DEVONThink. The last is very very slow on my PowerBook G4, and not very affordable. His functions partially overlapping with BE (absolutely the best computer app with Mellel).
Notebook is a slight and very fast app with strong outlining and indexing feature, the best information organizer which I know.

"Better" often depends on one's needs and preferences. For me, I need DT Pro's concordance and AI features. Integration with DevonAgent is appealing as well. With the database structure being redone for version 2, performance should also be enhanced.

DevonThink improved?

Post by maarten »

News about DevonThink
http://www.devon-technologies.com/news/index.html

"As promised last week, here's also the long overdue update for DEVONthink Personal. Version 1.9.9 adds all the little changes and fixes that we have already built into its larger brothers, from the search pop-up menu remembering your recent search terms to a more reliable Classify and See Also function. We've also updated DEVONthink Pro and Pro Office to version 1.3.1 with a few interface glitch fixes and a better compatibility to third-party applications, e.g., Bookends."

And the help-file of Version 1.3.1 states

"Improved: Naming of links dropped/pasted from other applications (e.g. Bookends)."

Okay sounds good, but what does it mean?

It means there is a new feature coming that will allow you to place links in DT to specific references in your Bookends database.

Coming soon to a desktop near you...

neat!

It sounds like each citation is geting some sort of address that can be clicked to open it in BE, right?

This is not exclusive to DT, is it? we'll be able to paste these BE addresses anywhere?

Will the BE 'address' also be a citation? Or will it be a long-stringed address?

You'll be able to drag and drop links (which you'll see as the reference title) into other apps that understand it. Not all applications do (but now DT does).

Is this being incorporated into citations in Word and Mellel as well, or is it exclusively a separate function?

It works with TextEdit and Scrivener, but not Word or Mellel.

Is support for Word and Mellel coming? I could help with Word -- I "know" a few people at the MacBU ;-)

Bookends is in active beta testing now, and the exact release date depends upon when we stop getting bug reports. I don't think it will be too long... (although not by this weekend).

:?: What do you mean with asking for support for Mellel??? There is already brilliant Mellel support which is even getting much better with the next versions of the applications. And also there is support for Word I think. I don't understand anything. :?: :?: :?:

I don't really care about Word, but how come this won't work in Mellel? Isn't that our partner in crime?

I'd like to be able to highlight a citation in Mellel and open it with a key or mousestroke in BE

I don't think Mellel supports live hypertext links at this time. Feature requests for Mellel should, of course, go to RedleX, not us. I'd wait until after the next Bookends and Mellel updates, though. As for Word, it misinterprets the dragged link. It's up to the receiving app to handle the dropped information properly.

There is a good discussion going on in the DT forum that is related the origins of this thread, specifically on academic research using DT and Bookends. See http://www.devon-technologies.com/phpBB ... php?t=4283
