where are reference types stored?

Post by Gerben »

I just noticed that after the most recent update my custom reference types were gone. I created them again. Maybe i am overlooking something but i cannot find a folder where custom reference types are stored.

When i make a custom filter or format i know it is stored in the 'application support' folder. Is there no such thing for the ref types? And would i tbe possible to implement something like this?

Thanks,
Gerben

Type definitions are stored in Bookends 9 Preferences.

But does that mean that after an update custom ref types are gone? Or should they still be there?

They should be there. Did you delete Bookends Preferences? If not, you can zip and send me Bookends 9 Preferences and I can take a look.

Now iI understand, i indeed deleted the preferences because of another problem (see: http://www.sonnysoftware.com/phpBB2/vie ... php?t=1504).

Could I ask if this can be changed in the future? There can always be situations where you need to delete prefs and it is really unfortunate to lose your custom ref types that way.

I'd like to see this if possible as well. Especially with limited number of fields, the reference types and field names for those types are no small task for me. i've had to trash preferences once and it was a pain to enter my reference types and field names again.

You can add me to the list of people requesting this, too.

(And, if we are on the topic of saving stuff in settings: I would be really wonderful if you could find a way to save which import filters were active that survives an update of Bookends.)

Ozean,
What exactly do you mean about import filters?

Put them in

~/Library/Application Support/Bookends/Custom Import Filters

Yes, that would work – but (a) that would only work for pro users and (b) that way I would not automatically work with the most recent filters meaning that I would have to check which have been updated or not (or I would have to beg you to include that information in your release notes ;) ).

I agree with ozean, just what I would like is that BE remembers the import filters I have inactivated. Usually I use only a few general filters like RIS and Bibtex. I deactivate all universities filters after each update, otherwise the scrolling list is to long for my needs (I wonder anyway on what criteria the default pre-selection is based..?)

Tom, I definitely agree with this. I would like the active filters, formats, and reference types to all be prioritized in the lists or be the only ones showing.

First of all, BE 10 is a very nice upgrade!

But there is one issue I noticed: ref types are still stored in the preferences and therefore the upgrade from 9 to 10 means I have to recreate my custom made ref types, and apply them to the correct refs.

Is it somehow possible to put selfmade re types in a custom folder like there is for formats (in a future update)?

Best,
Gerben

Hi Gerben,

I don't understand. Bookends 9 Preference settings are retained when you upgrade to Bookends 10. You shouldn't have to reenter anything.

Hi Jon,

You are right, on my MacBook there is no problem. I noticed the "issue" on the iMac at home but I probably used the BE 10 demo
