Format manager and multiple attachments

Post by dayton »

Greetings all,

After using Bookends for some time, I'm finally trying to figure out the formats manager. I've been trying to work out a simple way to put my Bibliographies online, in a private location, and be able to access my PDFs without setting my home computer up as a server. (Anybody offering Bookends server hosting???).

Anyway, I've created a custom format in the Format Manager that looks like this:
∆a. "t." f v$, no. $i` `(d): p-. `<a href="file://localhost/path/to/attachments/`h`">`h`</a> `¬
The problem is that "h" lists multiple attachments separated by a <BR> -- and I can't figure out anyway to create to different links from the two attachments -- they just become one "filename.pdf <BR> filename.jpg" link.

Does anyone know a fix for this?

Thanks!

Hi,

It's not possible to wrap two attachments in their own hypertext links. You may be able to get around this by hard-coding the attachments and html links in a field like Notes (or whatever) and the Notes field back to the user.

Jon,

Thanks for your reply. Is there any chance for an option like this for the future?

It's not a huge deal for me -- I'm really enjoying Bookends in general. My workaround would just be to go with the broken links and manual edit them from a browser if I need to access the file (for those rarer occasions when I do have two attachments on an entry). It's not elegant, but it works for a private setup.

Thanks again!

As an aside, it might be worth changing the HTML to compliant XHTML in a future version -- <br /> instead of <BR> etc.

Hi,

Thanks for the tip.

As for outputting two attachments wrapped in their own hypertext links, I don't see how this could be done with the current mechanism. Bookends doesn't "know" that you're placing html around the attachment names. It's only being asked to provide the names. There would have to be a completely different way of creating the html output for this to work.
