Hi,

There is no character limit. As long as you type faster than the time-out interval (about a quarter of a second) Bookends will continue to build the word to search for).

Would it be possible to include the manual in the application bundle so that it is always accessible?

We don't do that to keep the download size smaller. The link to it is right below the link to the application on our download page:

I understand completely, but how 1) much does the manual really contribute to download size, and 2) does it really matter today, when most people have broadband?

Just a thought ...

Well, it's an extra 7+ MB, and for those just downloading to take a cursory peek the user guide doesn't matter. You're right, though, that size is less important today than it was when we first separated the downloads. Do others want us to add the user guide to the application folder?

It's a small thing, I guess, but having the current user guide pdf included in the Bookends folder download would be great. One less thing to download, unzip, and move each update.

do NOT include manual in download

I disagree. Prefer to have the option to download the manual if and when I need it. Of course, it is possible to please everyone: have a combined download, in addition to separate files.

I personally don't have any preference on this question. But I know there are still more people without broadband internet than you would believe when broadband is standard since years for yourself.

If one doesn't have broadband internet, then downloading Bookends alone would take upwards of 12 hours; I don't think the people you mention are updating frequently!

I have a question about live search. If I'm looking for a surname like "dell'antonio", and I type "antonio," the reference won't be found. So is Bookends only looking at the beginning of words? I think that the same would go for trying to find "l-tryptophan" by typing "tryptophan."

Is this a feature? Don't get me wrong, I love Bookends and think you're doing terrific work, Jon, but I think I'd like to see Bookends finding strings in live search anywhere in the search text.

This really should be a new thread.

Bookends looks at the beginning of words because that's how words are indexed. It could of course look anywhere, but the "live" search would behave more like a "dead" search and be quite annoying to use. Some punctuation marks serve as a word separator -- I'm surprised at your example, because the apostrophe works as a word separator for me (antonio is found). Try rebuilding your database to make sure the indexes are current. And in general use Find or SQL search if you want more control over searches.
