Bookends Updating Mechanism

Post by zsteiner »

Has there been any thought to updating the way that Bookends updates? Specifically, utilizing Sparkle that a variety of Mac programs utilize to handle updates. Alternatively, storing preferences/support files in the library as opposed to a folder in the Applications folder, so preferences are not overwritten every time there is an update to Bookends. It's only a minor annoyance, but I would rather than have to deselect Library filters that I will probably never use, every time I update Bookends. Custom reference styles are also overwritten as well, no? Thank you for your wonderful work and excellent support, Jon.

Hi,

I think there are several misapprehensions here:

1. Bookends stores nothing in the Applications folder except for the updatable files we provide.

2. Preferences are not overwritten with each update. In fact, they are almost never touched (except to add new preference options).'

3. Custom formats and filters are never touched by updates.

4. This new release, 10.1.2, will also remember the status of your enabled formats/filters between updates. You should never have to check/uncheck them again after an update.

If the behavior you see is different from what I've described, please contact me directly with details.

I second the vote for using Sparkle. I love how it works on all the applications that use it, and there are a lot of them!

However, I'm not sure if the way Bookends is developed will allow it to use Sparkle or not? If it isn't too much trouble, please consider it. Otherwise, I'm happy to continue dragging and dropping. More info here:

Hi Luhmann, you're welcome. It will be apparent in the next update (10.1.4 or whatever it is).
