Displaying URL in the formatted reference

Sorry if this is obvious, but I can't seem to succeed in getting any formatted reference to include the URL field. I need that for Web-based sources that don't come from specialized databases.

My problem is this: I go to the formats manager intending to modify an existing format so that it will display the URL field as well as a,t, publication name, and date. But when I go to modify the thing (in ``Formats Manager'' window, with ``Formatting Options'' tab selected) what I see is a bunch of inexplicable code. I mean, I understand that a=author, but what the heck is ``(u5): u. <z>.'' ? Some common-sense attempts (maybe ``url'' will mean URL?) have failed. The User Guide describes the formats manager window but doesn't explain the mysterious symbology.

Can anyone point me to a guide?

And, again, apologies if this is a dumb question.

It's not a dumb question, but it is answered in the User Guide (section on formatting).

You can also see what each letter/symbol means by clicking on the "fields" popup menu in the format.

To answer your specific question, z = URL. u5 = user-defined field 5, u = publisher.

Thanks, Jon. I searched the user guide for a good long time, on ``formats manager'' and the like, did not manage to get to the explanation. Appreciate the pointer.

Sorry to belabor this, but adding ``z'' to the primary order window has no effect on the MLA format output, nor on the new format I'm trying to create as I experiment. It does seem to work with the JAMA format, though. Is there some other place where formats are defined that limits what can be done in the manager window?

Make sure that the reference Type matches the format Type where you added the 'z'. If that's not the problem, then this is really a tech support issue that can't be solved on a forum. Please contact me directly for tech support.
