Word 2008 Shortcuts

Post by gjh »

Can someone help with creating keyboard shortcuts to the Bookends scripts for Word 2008. It would be helpful to have a shortcut for insert citation, find in bookends, and goto bookends.

I have searched some, but no solution. Thanks in advance for your help. gjh

I searched but found no solution, either. Maybe someone else can come up with a technique for this in Word 2008?

Are they Apple scripts? If so there is a way to give them shortcuts by renaming the files, apparently.
(I read it recently on the microsoft.public.mac.office.word newsgroup, but don't remember the details. If they are Applescripts and I wouldn't be wasting my time, then I'll check.)

Hi nicka, yes, they are AppleScripts, so perhaps there is a solution?

Thanks,

See here.
Append to the name of the script (after the ".scpt" if using the extension)
a space, then a backslash "\", then one or more of the following:

m (= Command)
c (= Control)
o (= Option)
s (= Shift)

(Option and Shift cannot be used on their own, since they're standard typing
keys, only in combination with Command and/or Control);

then any A-Z upper-case letter (just one), representing the lower-case
letter you'll type.

Then place the script in the Word Script Menu Items folder the MUD folder,
and it will immediately appear in the Word script menu with the keyboard
code translated into standard characters for representing Command, Option,
etc.

In Word, there are further complications, since you need to avoid existing
keyboard shortcuts. (I haven't tested to see which rules if you don't.) You
can check those in Tools/Customize/Keyboard.
Hope this is useful.

Nicka, thanks. This worked for me. The only difference is that the script that bookends uses are .app. I still just followed the instructions and now have keyboard shortcuts for the most often used functions. Thanks again for your help.

Glad it worked for you (and glad that it works because I might have to use Word 2008 one day).
It is an amazingly kludgy way of doing things, though, isn't it? I'm a bit shocked (but not surprised) that MS managed to remove VBA and to not provide a way to assign shortcuts to Applescripts in the application itself.

I have created various different short-cuts and although they show up in the Word 2008 scripts menu, it doesn't seem to be working all the time (in fact most of the time). If I hit, say ctrl-command-option Y to insert a new citation Word hangs for a split-second and then nothing happens. If I select the menu manually, then it works (with a slight delay though). I have noticed that I get the following error in the console:

26/01/2008 21:24:55 Bookends[345] NSDocumentController Info.plist warning: The values of CFBundleTypeRole entries must be 'Editor', 'Viewer', 'None', or 'Shell'.

Any ideas what is going on? This new 2008 version is eeeeeevil - why oh why is Word the Worlds default word processor??

Word 2008 does appear to be pretty buggy (and launches in about twice the time of Word 2004 -- on an Intel Mac, which really baffles me). I suspect some of these issues will be cleared up with some 0.1 releases...

It launches about 5 times as slowly on my 1.5 Powerbook..... But ya' buggy it certainly is..! Maybe it'll be cleared up in some x.1 update but I suspect that we may have to wait until Office 2011 is released - in which time new problems will have crept up ;).

I just don't understand how such a B I G company can make such a pile of c*** when two brothers can make such a lovely program as Mellel - too bad they seem to have fallen asleep and aren't really updating the program with some badly needed tweaks. Oh well - maybe one day sonnysoftware will develop their own word processor ;).

Well put kga!! From many reports it sounds as though Office 2008 simply had some cosmetic surgery while they made it run natively on Intel processors (not without creating new problems either). I won't be upgrading anytime soon. The more I use Mellel and get accustomed to it, the more I appreciate the effort that went into developing this wonderful word processor.

It has indeed been some time between Mellel updates. But Ori posted today, commenting on some of the new features expected in future releases. Although they may appear to "have fallen asleep" about getting out new features advertised, I'm not sure that relatively speaking they're so much more dormant than M$.

Mellel 2.5 was in alpha testing at the beginning of this month (1/2008); may a beta be out shortly. Ori's posting today can be found in the Nitty Gritty forum.
