customized LOC import filter

Post by gke »

As I prefer to keep full control over the keywords I use in my DB I modify the LOC import filter not to import keywords when importing references through an online search and when updating Bookends I used to manually save a copy of the modified format and replaced the 'newer' import filter with it after updating. The new automatic updating feature of BE somewhat complicates this, as I only realised when I had already erased my customized LOC filter in the process. This made me think whether there was not, perhaps, a more clever way of handling this issue - wouldn't it be possible, for example, to have BE choose between import filters when importing from LOC in an online search? This would open up the possibility of having online importing tied to a custom import filter which is kept in the Bookends application support folder, which is not being replaced at update.

The rule is very simple -- when you create a new filter (based on an existing filter), the new one is placed in the Custom Import Filters folder and will not be touched when updating. If you modify an existing filter (without creating a new one first) you should manually move it to the Custom Import Filters folder and it will be safe. For the built-in import functions (PubMed, LOC, Amazon) Bookends will look for the filter by that name. But for LOC in particular, nothing prevents you from making a new filter based on it, give it a new name, and use that filter.

But how do you force BE to use the custom filter instead of the standard LOC filter? The procedure you describe is the solution that had come to my mind in the very first place, but I found BE ignored the custom filter and used the standard filter instead. It is quite a number of BE versions ago, however, that I tested this - has there been a change in this in the meantime that I am not aware of?

If there are two filters with the same name, Bookends should use the one in the Custom Filters folder. I'll check and see if that's broken.
