Copy hypertext link

Post by frvs »

Whenever I copy a hypertext link from the reference-list window, I get the link wrong -- typically, the link I get refers to the uppermost reference showing on the list. So, in order to get the link right, I have to actually open the reference and do shift + command + L from reference view. Not a big deal, but it's time consuming in the long run. I've tried rebuilding the database, but the problem persists. Any ideas?

I don't see this problem -- Bookends creates a link to the first selected reference in the list for me. Please contact me directly for tech support.

I am experiencing exactly the same problem - wrong reference when in list view, right reference when in reference view. Now, this is exactly what seems to happen: the first reference you copy a hyperlink to from list view works fine, but once you switch to another reference, the link to the first reference appears to "stick" to the keyboard, or, rather, the visual appearance of the link - if you click the hyperlink it transports you to the correct reference (in this case the second one). Switching to a third reference the produces the link to the second reference and so on.

If you switch to reference view behaviour is as should. Also, the problem only pertains to the Copy as Link menu item, not the Copy as text item, which produces the right link.

A third problem I suddenly hit upon when doing the testing for this posting is that the hyperlinks fail to be pasted into a Mellel document - text links are pasted as should.

Does this in any way help you in locating the problem, Jon?

There are two different issues here.

1. I can't reproduce the problem you are having, at least not as I interpret what you did. Perhaps you can directly send me a enumerated list of what I should do (with the exact steps).

2. Mellel doesn't support active hypertext links and there doesn't recognize the contents in the clipboard (unless it's plain text).

As to point 2 - all clear.

Point 1:
- Select reference 1 in list view and press Comm+Shift+L
- Switch to e.g. Text Edit
- Paste the hyperlink
- Switch back to BE
- Select reference to, still in list view
- Paste the result in Text Edit - you will see it is rendered as the Title of reference 1, but when you click it, you find out the link actually points to reference 2, as intended.

If you repeat the same procedure with the extra step of first opening the references in reference view you will find that the result is 100% as ought to be.

Sorry, Jon, typo - in the list above I of course meant not "select reference 2" instead of "select reference to" in step nr. 5

Hi, I assume you meant select reference 2 and press Command-Shift-L, then switch to TE and paste. I did that and I see the title of reference 2.

I can't explain why you're seeing a problem. If you can try another Mac, that might be informative.

Don't have another Mac at hand, but I think I have located the root of the problem:

If in BE preferences one selects the default rendition of the hyperlink as "Title" everything works as should, but if one selects e.g. APA citation, the situation is as I describe: the author and date of the first reference for which a hyperlink is generated get, so to speak, stuck in the clipboard and are used for every successive reference selected, even though the link itself does in fact point to a different reference every time. As said, when copying hyperlinks from references opened in reference view, the problem does not occur.

Aha, now we're getting somewhere. Yes, I can reproduce that. It's fixed for the next update. For the moment, you can drag and drop from the list view with Option-Command held down -- this will correctly insert text from the dragged reference.
