Newbie Question: Cite Multiple Consecutive Authors

Multiple Consecutive Authors

I am using Bookends with Mellel within the APA style. I have multiple consecutive authors that I would like to cite. From the user guide on page 140, it is my understanding that I need to bound the authors with parenthesis and separated each author with a semi colon as selected in the format manager. When I scan the document in Mellel it wraps a parenthesis around each author, even if I manually change it in Mellel by double clicking on the citation.

How do I get the correct APA format? For example: (Finders & Lewis, 2002; Leven & Arafeh, 2002) instead of (Finders & Lewis, 2002) (Leven & Arafeh, 2002).

Hi,

Happy to help. The citations must be in the same citation object. That is, when you open the citation object (double click on it) it should look something like this

Abraham et al., 2001, Int J Syst Evol Microbiol, 51, 27-34; Alley, 2001, Mol Microbiol, 40, 1335-43

If it does, you'll get one citation group after the scan.

Thank you for the quick reply. I was trying to format each citation object individually. Your suggestion works perfectly. I just need to make sure I don't make any typos when I retype all the citations into the same citation object. I was surprised Mellel wouldn't let me copy and paste into the citation object.

Hi,

I'm not sure how you are inserting the temporary citations into Mellel, but you should let Bookends do it for you. Either select multiple references in Bookends and press Command-Y, or do it individually and then move the citation objects so that they are adjacent (no spaces or anything else in between). Mellel treats adjacent citation objects as members of the same group.

If you have problems with this, please contact me directly (support@sonnysoftware.com) and send a small Mellel document that isn't giving you the results you want and I'll show you how to arrange the citation objects.
