COinS Data Import

Post by hrashid »

Jon,

I love the fact that I can import COinS data from certain websites. I have a question as to how BE works with COinS enabled sites. I can get the data from Wikipedia, for example, but not NY Times or BBC News, both of which Zotero recognizes. Is it a limitation of the filters in BE, or are these not true COinS sites?

Thanks,
Hussein

They don't embed COinS reference data. Because Zotero doesn't have a search and filter mechanism like Bookends and relies on a browser to obtain data, it does a lot of "screen scraping", poring through HTML to find information. Bookends does some of that, too, for other purposes. This isn't a great approach, for many reasons. I may add data detectors for some sites that don't offer COinS, but will be selective. Direct search is usually the best way to go.
