Any way to use institutional login for direct PDF fetching?

Post by kurisu »

Hi there,

Did a brief search and play around with some settings like changing the URL for Pubmed. Just want to know if it's possible to ask bookends to get PDF directly with institutional login?

Cheers,
Chris

Hi,

I'm not sure exactly what you mean. There are lots of ways to get pdfs from within Bookends. What scenario do you have in mind?

Thanks for the reply and sorry about not making it clear.

I mainly use Pubmed. Sometimes the built-in "Get PDF" function couldn't get PDF of a particular article, say from Science. I'm pretty sure our university has subscription for Science. So what I did was to change the URL of the built-in Pubmed (File --> Go to URL --> Edit Bookmark) by adding proxy.library.adelaide.edu.au. It seems that, in Safari that is, by putting proxy.library.adelaide.edu.au always goes to the library page, once username and password are entered, I can get the PDF that I couldn't get from Bookends.

So I'm stuck at don't know where to put my university login for full-text.

Hope it makes more sense than my previous post.

Cheers,
Chris

Hi,

The Get PDF function relies on a number of things, including ip authentication, which you'll need a VPN client for when you're off campus.

Bookends browser (reference surfing) can get to a publisher's site if you have id/password authentication. Then you should be able to get the pdf. So you should be able to have Bookends go to proxy.library.adelaide.edu.au, log in, and get the information you want. Are you saying that works for you in Safari but not Bookends (when reference surfing)? If so, please contact me off-forum for tech support (support@sonnysoftware.com).
