Last name only for authors

Post by chahn »

Is there a way to create a bibliography format that will output the author's full name for the first reference but only the last name for subsequent references? I would imagine that I could make a "last name only" field and rewrite the formats to use that field instead of the author field for later references, but I'm wondering if there is an easier way.

Yes, you'd use the secondary order field for those (that field is used when the same reference is encountered again). And you can specify that only the surname be used.

I am working in a Mellel document, and I'm having a heck of time trying to get the author's last name only to appear after the first reference.
No matter what I do on the Formats dialog, I always get a full name in subsequent references to the same reference. I've tried both the secondary order field, and the dialog box on the left (in all combinations), nothing seems to work in any of the reference types. For a while, I had only last names in _all_ references, first and subsequent, but I can't get full names in the first reference and surnames only in subsequent.

Is there another command/menu I need to set?

Note: I'm still using version 9.2

Please post a screen snap of the first tab of the format definition so I can see how you've set it.

I don't know how to insert the screen snap directly into my post, but here is a link:

Hi,

That's the format for creating the bibliography (so secondary order is ignored, because you can't have one in a bibliography). You need to be invoking a custom citation format (one that creates the footnotes for you). For Chicago, that is the format called Chicago 5th A Footnotes. That's where the secondary order belongs.

At first, I was confused, because the screenshot I sent you was from Chicago 15th A. But after looking at the user manual closely again, I realized that the custom citation format was checked but not set to Chicago 15th A. I rescanned my document and it now works. Thanks!

Just to be clear, you can have a format call itself to create footnotes, but only if you don't need a bibliography. If you need a bib, then the "main" format called the custom footnote format. So if you don't need a bib, then what you're doing now is correct.
