I am trying to figure out how to use the browser in Bookends to search my university's library. They have access to databases that I normally use to search for journal articles. I have read the manual and searched the forums and am stumped. Can somebody tell me what to do?
Thank you,

Re: how use bookends browser
Hi,
Go to Online Search. Click on the Web/Text toggle button on the right (middle of the window). Type in the URL of your university's library and then use the browser.
Since you'll want to access this site regularly, I'd enter it in the File -> Go To URL -> Edit Bookmarks window. Then you can use this menu to get to your library (if the Online Search window is open, it will use Bookends browser -- if not, it will launch your default browser).

Re: how use bookends browser
Okay, maybe I'm missing the point of this. I can follow the instructions fine, but I don't want to just "browse" in Bookends (I can do that easier/better other ways), but I'd like to browse then import a citation from a University database. There seems to be no way to do this with the above instructions. Am I missing something?
Re: how use bookends browser
If you search a site (like your university's library) in Bookends, Bookends knows how to import the citations (the filter tells it).
If you browse to a site, and it has COinS embedded references (like WorldCat, CiteULike, Wikipedia, etc.), Bookends will recognize them and offer to import.
If you browse to a site without these, Bookends won't know if there is reference info there or not (or how to import it, if it's there).
So you should search your library directly with a Bookends filter. If for some reason you want to browse to it, you can, and if there are COinS you can import that way. In any case, you can save the web page and/or pdf (if available) as an attachment by drag and drop, which may be useful. You can also attach the web page to an Internet Type that Bookends creates for you (right-click for that option) or to an empty reference.

Re: how use bookends browser
Hi,
I'm trying to use this feature on FirstSearch/WorldCat website (http://firstsearch.oclc.org/), but I never get the button to download the citation. My library catalogue doesn't work, and neither does Harvard's Hollis catalogue. In fact, I've so far been able to find only one site that this worked on. Is this going to get better over time, or if it doesn't work now, will it never work?

Re: how use bookends browser
Why not ask the provider to support COinS? Bookends can detect citations in COinS format (a standard). There is also a data detector for JSTOR, because it is such a widely used site in the humanities. I can't access the proprietary WorldCat link in your post, but the database detectors work with this WorldCat source:
http://www.oclc.org/worldcat
As far as adding new detectors, it's possible if they are popular and not proprietary (e.g. Google Scholar). Of course, most sites allow you to export the reference metadata, and Bookends browser let's you grab the pdf.
