When we added the refbase upload pdf uploading wasn't permitted. Perhaps it is now (I haven't checked).

Ahhh... It is, but only on private servers, not refbase.org. Sorry for the confusion.

FYI, while not fully automatic, that's what Bookends Server is about. With Bookends 10 you can enter references, retrieve reference files in RIS format (for import), and of course you can get the attached pdf. Of course you don't need Bookends as a client...even EndNote users on a PC can do all this with Bookends Server running on a Mac.

If you haven't already, you might want to look at the User Guide section on Bookends Server.

Searchable Databases

Another post v. 10 feature that could be useful (at least that's what the librarians at my institution seem to think) would be the ability to search (say) MLA or JSTOR directly through BE (on analogy with the way that Endnote handles its "connection" files). Maybe this is something that BE can already do, and I've missed it (I do routine internet searching of library catalogs through BE, but don't know of internet enabled filters for MLA, JSTOR, or other licensed dbs that require searching from a particular IP).

I don't think JSOR has an API system so Bookends can't communicate with it.

Google Scholar indexes JSTOR. I suggest that users request an API from Google Scholar, then we'd be in business.

JSTOR uses a non-z39.50 mechanism, which I've looked at a bit. Don't know about MLA. In general, though, I need access to atypical sites to begin to explore solutions, and I don't have access to either of those, so it's difficult.
