Request: Record the "date added"

Post by Luhmann »

Many programs (iTunes and iPhoto for example) keep track of when records are added and/or modified. This would be very useful in Bookends. When I am doing research I am likely to add many citations on a given topic all at once, or within a short time frame. If I could browse my database by date I could easily locate all the citations I added today, or in the past three days, week, etc.

Just today I was doing something in Flickr and I was so pleased that it allowed me to edit as a batch all the photos I'd uploaded today - then I was importing a bunch of records into Bookends and found it frustrating that I couldn't easily assing a label, keyword, group, or other metadata to all the records that I had imported today.

I think this would be a very welcome feature!!!

The date added is available -- you can see it at the bottom of the Info Drawer. But you can't search on this. I'll try to get around to that at some point.

But do remember that the reference number usually reflects the relative date added (sometimes not true if you duplicate a record or Insert a reference). So it is usually possible to find references entered on the same date, for example, by inspection.

Is this only true for references that are added manually (i.e. by entering all the information via typing)? A large part of my database is made of up references that were converted from EndNote, and they have no date indication in the Info Drawer. It would nevertheless be helpful if the data added were set to the import date.

Is the date added for downloaded references, too?

The date added holds for most ways you get reference into Bookends. It was added in 9.0.5. Any references added before 9.0.5 won't have dates, of course, only those added in 9.0.5 or later.
