Word crashies repeatedly and blames Bookends template

Since updating to 10.4.8 (Intel), I have a reproduceable crashing problem with Word. It goes like this.

1. I start up Word, and it crashes.
2. I start it up again, and I get this error message:

"Word encountered file corruption while opening Bookends Word X Template. Part of this document may be recoverable. Attempt recovery now? [No/Yes]"

3. If I pick "No", Word starts normally and remains stable until I exit and open the program again, in which case the cycle starts over. If I pick "Yes", I get the message "The Add-In Template is Not Valid" and the program crashes.

When I click on "no" and get Word running, Bookends seems to work fine from within Word, by the way.

I have tried removing the Bookends Template (and Add-in), and then the problem disappears completely. (Word also starts up more quickly than I remember it doing in 10.4.7, but perhaps that is expected.)

I have downloaded Bookends again, and tried reinstalling from the fresh copy. The problem reappears immediately.

I have tried the usual troubleshooting steps of deleting various caches, fixing permissions, etc. etc., without any success. I have also trashed the MS Word preferences, with no success either.

As noted above, the problem first appeared after the 10.4.8 update. I have the problem both on my MacBook laptop and on an Intel iMac.

When you say installed a fresh copy, did you also remove the older Bookends template and add-in and manually reinstall them as well?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, that's what I did.

Hm, that's very odd. We've had no other reports like this (and I personally use the Word template on a PPC and Intel Mac, running 10.4.8, without problems -- I'm running it right now). The template is quite simple, and since it can't be modified, I have no idea how it could become "corrupted". Look at the modification date -- it should be 7/25/05 for the template.

Yes, that's the date on it.

Then the file hasn't been modified. And there is nothing in Mac OS X 10.4.8 that could possibly affect this. I hate to suggest this, but have you reinstalled Word (although if it affects two different machines, that's unlikely to help)? Does anyone else have any suggestions?

Before you reinstall the whole office package I would recommend moving/deleting all the office/word related preferences in your home folders Library/Preferences folder and then restarting word. MS Office preferences have a long history of getting corrupted and causing diverse nuisances…
