Controlling commas

Post by kpsc »

I use MHRA, and have made some modifications for MHRA Author-Date. I am having some problems with hanging commas before the brackets containing place and publisher. I have tried to figure out if delimiters will help, and I suspect they will, I just can't figure it out and wonder if someone can help.

I need there to be no comma before the bracket. So the following is what I want:

Carruther, Mary J. 1998. The Craft of Thought, Cambridge Studies in Medieval Literature, 34 (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press).

This is what I get:

Carruther, Mary J. 1998. The Craft of Thought, Cambridge Studies in Medieval Literature, 34, (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press).

This would be fine if something without a comma followed the series title, but I need to find a formula so that BE will never put a comma next to the bracket. So in the above example, if there were no series title, it would come out like this:

Carruther, Mary J. 1998. The Craft of Thought, (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press).

But I need that comma gone. How can I get it to recognize if the field following contains information or not?

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried the ~ (tilde) character, which can bind to the following field (perhaps preceded by a |)? Please check the User Guide for how to use this.
