Have attachments, will travel?

Hi folks!

Sorry if this is redundant with other threads, but I didn't spot one with quite the same question.

I'm considering starting to save PDFs and attach them to the references in my Bookends database - till now I've been an avid printer-outer. I've created an attachment folder to pop into the same folder as I keep my reference library in, like so:


Outer Folder
|
|-Reference Library
|-Attachments

The idea, of course, was that when I sync, or upload to iDisk, or otherwise copy, I though I'd be able to just grab the outer folder and be good to go.

No can do - it doesn't retain the links.

I'm guessing those who know how the software works are giving a big 'duh...' at the moment.

Anyway. Question is this - is there a way I can easily copy the reference library AND the attachments folder when I'm on the go, without having to drop each in an identical place in a computer with an identical folder heirarchy each time? Seems a bit cumbersome, specially since part of the allure of attachments was the ability to take my article library with me.

Hi,

I recommend keeping your attachments in the defafult location for Bookends:

~/Documents/Bookends/Attachments/

That way, you can easily copy them to another computer. And when you upgrade to a new version of Bookends. you can be sure the attachments aren't deleted.

I hear you - but then it's still a question of digging it and my reference library out separately, copying through my preferred method, and then hunting through to drop them into the equivalent spot each time. (I use my official 'documents' folder hardly at all, due to the amount of stuff I don't put there that different software keeps adding). I was kinda hoping to just drop the whole shebang from one hard drive to the next before hitting the road. Hence, all in one folder.

I know it doesn't sound like much, but it's pretty far outside my usage patterns. Aliases strategically placed might help some, but...

I don't suppose the option to use a relational heirarchy between the library and attachments could make it onto the wishlist for the next version...

Hi,

There is a relational hierarchy, but I'd advise against it. If a folder named Attachments is in the same folder as Bookends, it will be found. This is mostly there for historical reasons. Beware, you run the risk of accidentally deleting your attachments if you replace an older Bookends Folder with an update.

Of course, you can set your default attchment folder to any location you like (Preferences). If you set it to the same place on both machines (e.g. /Hard drive/Desktop/Bookends Attachments) you can move attachments back and forth to the corresponding folder and Bookends will find them.

yes you can do it, but watch out where you store the data , or an update will stamp over it.


They also need to look at splitting out user 'generated' templates ,into their own folder so during an update you can use the latest revision and just move your "created" types , also perhaps they need to 'lock' the base types and only allow cloning.

Any formats or filters you create are moved to the ~/Library/Application Support/Bookends/Custom... folders for exactly that reason. This has been true since Bookends 8 or so.
