Bookends and tracked changes in Word X

Can anyone tell me if there is a fundamental incompatibility between scanning a Word X document to build a bibliographywith Bookends (9.2.2), and tracked changes?

The problem i have found is that if I scan a draft of a paper to format the references, this causes all tracked changes (eg comments from different authors etc) to disappear. They are apparently all 'accepted' since the colour coding and underlining disappears.

This is annoying because it is often useful to see the refs in their final format before everything else is done. One can work around it by making different versions but it would be nice to know if there is a simple fix.
