Repeated author name in stringed same-author citations

Post by frvs »

Given the wondrous pace of recent improvements in BE, I wonder whether a particularly missed feature has become a dream-come-true yet.

Say that I have this string of unformatted citations:
{Pitt-Rivers, 1983, #45874; Pitt-Rivers, 1987, #29293; Pitt-Rivers, 1994, #40066; Pitt-Rivers, 1995, #29948}.

If I format them as in-text citations using Chicago B, BE duly keeps only the author's name once, which is perfect:
(Pitt-Rivers 1983, 1987, 1994, 1995).

BUT if I format the same string according to Chicabo A in a note, I get the author's name, Julian Pitt-Rivers, repeated before every citation, which is awkward and requires correction by hand:
Julian Pitt-Rivers, “Le sacrifice du taureau,â€

Hi,

Take a look at the format for footnotes. Is set to use author-date formatting, and if so is "Use year-only for repeated authors" checked? If so, please send me the format (zipped).

Hi,

You did not have "Use year-only for repeated authors" checked.

Jon,

Sorry, that's not it. We're not talking about author-date citations here. I had asked about this back in May (http://www.sonnysoftware.com/phpBB2/vie ... ight=#6684), and then you said you would see how hard it would be to implement. Now I'm asking, what are the prospects? Thanks.

Sorry, yes, I see. The problem is that custom citations take into account the bibliography settings of the second format, not the citation settings. Bookends will only consolidate similar citations by the same authors if they are in author-date format. For technical reasons, it would be very difficult to do this for custom citations, since by definition they are entirely arbitrary. That is, they may contain author, title, volume, etc. and may even differ between the first and second time they are cited. At this time I don't see how Bookends can determine how repeats in a custom citation can be consolidated.
