Spotlight search in a static group

Post by Gerben »

I wonder if it is possible to do a Spotlight search which is confined to the references of a particular static group?

You can do that with virtual groups:

1. Do spotlight search.
2. Create a temporary group from the hits (Temp) -- this contains the references with attachments found by spotlight.
3. Click on Temp and Command-Click on another (or more than one) static group.

You will now see the references in your group that were also found by the spotlight search.

(FYI, if you wanted to see the references contained in ANY of the groups, you'd click on the gear icon below groups and change AND to OR).

Thanks for the very fast answer, this is exactly what I needed.

One more thing: would it be perhaps be possible to include this as a criterium in the Search dialogue?

You mean add groups to the Find criteria? Perhaps. But there are several simple ways of doing this now (virtual groups as I described, and the use of color labels), so I'm not sure making Find more complicated is a good option.

Well, to be clear, the virtual groups solution you described works fine.
It's only a matter of skipping some steps by indeed adding it to the find criteria (in that case there would be no need to create a temporary group and combine that with another one).

Of course I have no idea how much work this is and if others find this useful.

Actually, it's even simpler than I first posted.

You can include Hits as part of a virtual group. So the process is

1. Do a Spotlight Find. You now have the matches in Hits.
2. Command-Click on the Group of interest.

That's it -- you'll now see the references in the group that match the spotlight search.

Well, that basically eliminates my request, this makes it indeed very simple. Many thanks!
