I'm not understanding this. It took me a while to understand that I can't actually apply a formatted citation while I am writing (correct?)---otherwise I get this "Bookends cannot scan a bundled document" (whatever that is).

I have to export from Mellel as an rtf and then run "Scan a Document." I did this, and when I opened the revised rtf, my footnote numbers are fullsize (in the text and in the footnote area), and the footnote place holder itself didn't convert to a real citation. What am I missing here? I'm trying to understand how Mellel and BE work in harmony and if Mellel's bibliography sidebar plays any role at all.

I tried the "scan a document" again with the rtf open in Mellel, and the citation is still unformatted. I'm thinking there's a step I'm missing to a) turn citation placeholders into full citations, and b) not change Mellel's formatting.

If have other Q's regarding entering records into BE, but I would like to seet this part work before jumping to that.

You don't scan files saved from Mellel, you scan from *within* Mellel.

Thanks for that. Ok, so I copied a citation from BE (⌘+Y), and it shows up in Mellel as a temporary citation, good. Then I scanned the document within Mellel (what they label as "Create a new style") and Mellel pasted like three additional temporary citations after one another. Why is it pasting this reference citation three times?

The only way to get a formatted citation seems to be to copy and paste formatted and then reapply my character style to it. That is, the source in BE has sans serif font styles etc.

You scan by either using the Bibliography Palette and clicking on the Scan Document button, or using Edit -> Bibliography -> Scan Document.

Make sure that in Bookends preferences you have set the citation separator to semicolon, not comma (which is only used for BibTeX scans).

Guilty. I am coming from a XeLaTeX background. I'm back to word processors for some reasons. Ok, so that solved that.

Now, I have the formatting of the citation itself to solve. It has serifed and sans seriffed. Is there a way to set a global font in the BE so that the chapter title and book title aren't in sans serif while the rest of the citation is seriffed?

I tried the long process of selecting each element within the record and changing the font size, but that is ridiculously inefficient.

This program has bulked up since I last looked at it (2006?), very impressive.

You can set the default fonts for references, lists, and bibliographies in Preferences.

If you have overridden these for references (e.g. set a font or font style for individual references) you can use the Global Change -> Restore Default Font and Styles to undo that (and now the bib font will take over). With Mellel you also have the additional option of settings in that app that override Bookends' settings.

But there is no setting for different fonts for different fields, sorry.

Ok, perhaps one last item.
When the bibliography generates, the font size won't change to 11 pt. In Preferences, it seems to make no difference if I select the Bibliography font use; either way it keeps coming out at 12 pt. In Mellel, the preference is set to default with no replacements. I should note, that the citation itself shows 11 pt like I want, but not the bibliography.
