Complete bibliographic information using Search services

Post by aechallu »

I wonder if this is implemented somehow and I'm missing it, or if it makes sense to implement...

The summary: I would like that bookends look up for bibliographic information when I create a new reference from a pdf

The current workflow: I download a full-text PDF from a non-jstor journal. Then I want to import it in BE. I drag it to the main window, and select "create new reference." (See Note 1). Once I have the empty reference I fill in the info, looking up the information in Safari. Sometimes I'm smart enough to remember that it's better to find the import the record from Google Scholar into BE and then automatically attach the pdf.

The suggested workflow: Upon dragging the PDF to BE (see Note 2), and being prompted about importing it as a new, empty reference, I would like to also have another option to locate a new reference in the Online Search window, and automatically attach the dragged PDF (note 3).

The feature on stereoids: a) I'd love to be able to complete bibliographic information based on the information already typed in for the reference. Say I have author and title, I'd like BE to complete publisher, place, year. I'd add this command right under Refs, around Get PDF.

b) I have the PDF open in skim/preview/whatever, I select the title or any arbitrary text, click on Services/Bookends/Add to Database, and BE searches the highlighted text in Google Scholar, creates the reference and attaches the file :-)

Thanks!

Note #1: I can't rename the file at this point unless I unclick 'create new ref' and click it again
Note #2: dropping the file on the Dock would be my ideal method
Note #3: If only one database is open, is it possible to have the "Import" drop-down menu behave as a 1-click import button? I never used more than one database open, and I think you also encourage users to use one database except in very specific cases. Having to choose the database each time seems redundant.

Hi,

Thanks for the request. I intend to include more features that make obtaining full reference information when you already have the pdf easier. Note that right now if the pdf has a doi (digital object identifier) Bookends will find and download the reference information for you. And for references where you have the author and title, don't forget to try Refs -> OpenURL search, which may locate the full reference for you as well.

On a related note, is it possible to have Bookends not rename downloaded pdfs from the internet search window? When attaching a file manually I can turn it off, but when importing references it will not give me this option. Since I do all my pdf management from within Bookends I have no need for altering filenames. Also, there ought to be an option to re-format the date from an imported citation. From JSTOR they come out as yyyy-mm-dd; it would be nice if either the import filter or the output format could be configured to change that order (using System Preferences or a user-defined format).

Hi,

Bookends has to give the pdf some name, and the ones from the internet have (often) nonsense names at the end of a URL. Why would you want these instead of something more useful that Bookends provides?

As for date formats, there are far too many variations for the Mac OS X API to handle reliably.
