How to import this Chinese MARC Display info?

Post by yinglam »

Hi,

In this page:
http://innreach.hku.hk/search~S0?/tJiao ... e&1%2C1%2C

there contains information about a Chinese book. The problem I think actually is not Chinese, but how to import this MARC info. I have taken a deep look into the Bookends userguide and looked into the Filters Manager. But I am sorry that I can't find the MARC filter. I know that there is a tab for each of the filter, but I really don't understand how that works.

Or is this because this university system is not supported in Bookends?

Thanks.

Since I don’t know how to import a Marc-output text snippet into Bookends (I tried to put it in a text file and then used the Hong Kong University import filter to try to import it, but that didn’t work…), I took a look at their website checking if they offer Z39.50 access. Bookends (like Endnote and other programs) can use a Z39.50 interface to access libraries directly. Judging from the results that popped up in a Google search, it looks as if HKULL might offer such an interface. However, I was not able to find any information about how to access it.

Maybe you can e-mail someone at HKULL and ask them if they have an open Z39.50 interface that Bookends could use to access their database? If they do, it would be excellent if they could give you the information you would need (server name and address, text encoding, etc.). Then either you could generate a new import filter manager or you post the information here, so that others can help you with that.

Since HKULL is a major library aggregate, there will probably be other people who are interested in accessing HKULL through Bookends…

Hi Ozean,

Thank you for your detailed reply. I also tried to do sth, but these MARC stuff is really beyond my skills level to comprehend. I wonder, those information under the tab of 'Internet' at the Hong Kong University filter, is the kind of info that you suggest me to ask? Well, I am confused by those settings from the Bookends userguide too, talking about some subfield and delimiter stuff, which I again, totally, do not understand.....

My main objective is to maximize the use of Bookends in importing Chinese references directly.

Thanks.

Blessings,

I would just ask them if it is possible to access the catalog using a Z39.50 interface – and if this is possible, if they could provide you (or Jon) with the relevant information to set the access up.

I guess there might be other ways to parse the info, but I do not really know them…

Hi,

This is the reply I got from HKU, Any insights?

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Since we do not use Bookends, I am not sure what exact information you need.
While using Endnote, another bibliographic software, we need the following
information:

Server: HKU Libraries Dragon
Server Address: library.hku.hk
Database: INNOPAC
Database Name: INNOPAC
Element Set: F
Port ID: 210
Record Syntax: MARC21
Text: ANSEL

yinglam,

there already is an import filter for this library in Bookends. The info you gave me is for Hong Kong University – if you look into your import filters, this is already listed, and the information is the same as the one they gave you…

I thought that the HKULL catalog and Hong University’s Library would be different entites. But it seems that this is not correct. I would recommend to try an online search:

* make the Hong Kong University import filter active inside Bookends filter manager {go to File > Import Filter Manager…) that is already included in Bookends

* go to File > Online Search… select the Hong Kong University filter and enter your search criteria…

good luck!

Ozean,

Many thanks.

I tried, but failed.

I suspect the HKU does not allow quite a number of titles to be searched through the interface.

I can search for a lot more titles through the their web library search interface, but through the online search inside bookends, a lot fewer....

Thanks.................................

BTW, I have seen someone around 2 years ago succeeded in importing Chinese MARC display record.....how I wish I can contact him.....his name is Luhmann........

Hi,

It sounds like you didn't fail, but that you succeeded. You just got back fewer references than from the web interface. That's a function of the library and how their server is set up. Bookends just feeds them the query and accepts the results. The search is done by the library, not Bookends.
