Update install fails

Update to 10.4.1 fails with a message that `Bookends lacks permission to write to the application's directory.' I have tried changing permissions for everything I can find related to Bookends -- all the folders and subfolders associated with the program in Applications, Application Support and elsewhere. No effect.

What and where is the Bookends directory? I would be glad to fix the permissions problem if I could learn what this means.

Thanks!

David

yep, this is the problem I have too.

have you perhaps upgraded to 10.5.6? Apple, not sonnysoft, seem to me the most likely culprit in these cases...

Bookends is in Bookends 10 Folder. Make sure all permissions are read/write.

I've changed all permissions to read/write, the problem is still here.

EDIT: the updater did install 10.4.1, I checked out the contents of BE10 folder and there it was. Why the error message then? :?

thanks

Hi,

It seems that in Sparkle isn't working nicely at the moment -- it may be related to the recent 10.5.6 OS update. I've reproduced the problem now that I've installed 10.5.6. I'll look into this and see if there's a solution at this time. In the meantime, download Bookends 10.4.1 manually from our downloads page:

Btw this is what I did last night after my 3 tries with the Sparkle thing -- install from the web page -- and it worked fine. I did indeed recently upgrade to 10.5.6. Looks like that's the culprit.

I got the same error and I'm using 10.4.11. Downloading from the web site worked fine for me as well. Here is what my Bookends.app Info pane said:

Version: Bookends 10.4

Ownership & Permsissions

You can Read & Write

Hi,

I've had one other report of a problem with 10.4.11 and Sparkle. But mostly 10.5.6. We'll see if we can sort through the problem with Sparkle. In the meantime, regular downloading from the web site is working well.

I think we now understand the problem with Sparkle updating and Mac OS X 10.5.6, and I'm working on a fix. Until I report the solution, anyone who has installed 10.5.6 should avoid using Sparkle with the Bookends 10.4.1 update and just download it manually from our download page:

I have the same problem with 10.5.5 when installing BE 10.4.1. I hope that does not complicate matters to much. But I thought it would be wise to mentioned it.

I've modified the way Bookends interacts with Sparkle to deal with the changes introduced in the newer (Sparkle) version. This will avoid the installation problems that some users have run into.

Unfortunately, these changes cannot be made retroactive, so existing versions of Bookends (including 10.4.1) will still not update properly.

I've decided, therefore, to temporarily disallow Sparkle updating. I'll probably make an early release of Bookends 10.4.2, whose only significant change will be the updated Sparkle. Users who download and install 10.4.2 should be able to upgrade to subsequent releases (e.g. 10.4.3) via Sparkle again.

So, for those reading this who have not upgraded to 10.4.1 yet, please perform the upgrade by simply downloading 10.4.1 (or 10.4.2, if it's available when you read this) from our web site.
