Turabian--footnotes versus biblio

Post by arathe »

Hi...

I was wrestling with how to get Bookends to generate one style of (Turabian) formatting for footnotes, and another for the biblio. Then I noticed: that's exactly what your standard "Turabian" format does.

I'm wondering--if I make a custom format, can I instruct it to do the same thing (use 2 different formats for footnotes and biblio)? I can't find the menu options to allow this.

Thanks.

Hi,

That's how custom citation formats work. The "master" format creates the bibliography. In the Citation tab, you tell it to use another format to create the footnotes (the custom citation format). There's a radio button that let's you select that option, and a popup menu from which to select the custom citation format to use.

Ah--I get it. Thanks, Jon. For some reason I was thinking of the footnote format as standard, and the biblio as a variant. I see now that it's the other way round. Thanks for clearing that up for me. :D

I am not sure I understand but I would like to understand. I am trying to use BE with Mellel and need to use Turabian footnotes for the footnotes and Turabian for the bibliography. Jon, I understand the concept, but I am not locating a "Citation" tab, perhaps because I need to scan my Mellel document first. Where is the Citation tab?

Sorry, but I am a noob and trying to get this right for my thesis submission at the end of the month.

No problem. The citation tab is in the format window. It contains the settings that relate to the the in-text citations, as opposed to the bibliography.

Thank you so very much for your assistance, Jon. After looking up "format window" in the user guide (sorry, I am learning the names of the various windows in several programs at once), I found the Citation tab with ease. This has solved my problem! Thank you again for your very timely response.
