I am using Nisus Writer Pro 2.0.2 and Bookends 11.2.8. I have noticed that whenever I have Unicode characters in cited pages, the resulting text is garbled in the RTF. If I use an en-dash to separate pages in a cited pages page range (p. 192 in the manual), the temporary citation looks like {author, year, #85202@65–68}. When the document is scanned, I end up with John Doe, Book Title (place: year), 65\u8212?68. I also occasionally need to cite a reference not by page number but by section, so I use the § symbol, U+00A7. The temporary citation looks like {author, year, #85202@§93}. When the document is scanned, I end up with \u167?93. A similar thing happens when I try to use a Greek letter as part of the cited pages.
This does not happen if I have Unicode characters anywhere in the title, author, etc.; nor does it happen when I use quoted text in the temporary citation using \ \; nor does it happen when the format has an en-dash in the page range and I provide no cited pages, e.g., for the page range for a journal article; nor does it happen with Mellel. I suppose I could use quoted text for all my citations, but that seems to run against the spirit of the @ character as explained on p. 191, and I so like the en-dash for page ranges.
Unicode, RTF Scan, and Cited Pages
Re: Unicode, RTF Scan, and Cited Pages
I see the problem. I'll dig deeper and see if I can fix it in the next update.

Re: Unicode, RTF Scan, and Cited Pages
OK, it's fixed for the next update. While playing with it I found another small bug where an en dash in cited pages was replaced with an em dash, and vice versa, in the final citation (affects both NWP and Word). This has been fixed as well.

Brilliant, thank you, that will make my fine typographer's heart glad.
Re: Unicode, RTF Scan, and Cited Pages
Jon,
Thanks for the 11.2.9 update. Unicode characters in cited pages in Nisus Writer Pro now work for me.
However...
And when I use an em dash, I get an en dash after scanning.

I had not seen this problem before (naturally), but now I am suddenly seeing it. I created a simple text document with an en dash in the cited pages, and after scanning I had an em dash. Here is the final raw RTF:While playing with it I found another small bug where an en dash in cited pages was replaced with an em dash, and vice versa...
Code: Select all

{\fldrslt {\pard \s1105 {\f1 \i A Glossary of Literary Terms }{(8th ed.; Boston: Thompson Wadsworth, 2005), 123\emdash 189.}}}}
Re: Unicode, RTF Scan, and Cited Pages
The fix was made, but inadvertently left out of the release build. Please download 11.2.9 again, the corrected release has been uploaded.
