Unicode, RTF Scan, and Cited Pages

I am using Nisus Writer Pro 2.0.2 and Bookends 11.2.8. I have noticed that whenever I have Unicode characters in cited pages, the resulting text is garbled in the RTF. If I use an en-dash to separate pages in a cited pages page range (p. 192 in the manual), the temporary citation looks like {author, year, #85202@65–68}. When the document is scanned, I end up with John Doe, Book Title (place: year), 65\u8212?68. I also occasionally need to cite a reference not by page number but by section, so I use the § symbol, U+00A7. The temporary citation looks like {author, year, #85202@§93}. When the document is scanned, I end up with \u167?93. A similar thing happens when I try to use a Greek letter as part of the cited pages.
This does not happen if I have Unicode characters anywhere in the title, author, etc.; nor does it happen when I use quoted text in the temporary citation using \ \; nor does it happen when the format has an en-dash in the page range and I provide no cited pages, e.g., for the page range for a journal article; nor does it happen with Mellel. I suppose I could use quoted text for all my citations, but that seems to run against the spirit of the @ character as explained on p. 191, and I so like the en-dash for page ranges.
