suppress series title in output

I cannot figure out the explanations in the User Guide for this. Can someone kindly give me the correct coding in the formats manager for a book reference, when I wish to suppress a series title that has no series number accompanying it? My present coding is:

a. d. t. (f u14). l: u.

If the u14 field contains no data, I would like the " (f u14)" part suppressed in the output.

You might try conditional groups. Something like

a. d. t.{ (f u14).} l: u.
