Hi,

I have a question re the formatting of journal articles. It concerns the output of the year when there is no volume to be used in the bibliography. The problem stems from the fact that for some journals I have (and want) volume number, and for others I don't. For those journals that should have a volume number I want the date to be output in parenthesis. Those journals that have no volume should have no parenthesis around the date.

E.g.:
Walter, G., Bookends, in: Great Journal 23 (2004), pp. 567.
Walter, G., Bookends revisited, in: Even Greater Journal, 2005, pp. 4565.

The "When a field is empty"-logic on page 135 of the user's manual can't handle this, it seems. So, apart from setting up two different ref types (one for journals with volume and another one for those without it) or including the parenthesis in the date field of the ref entry for those refs that have no volume, is there any possibility to make Bookends ignore by default the parenthesis if there is no volume?

I don't think so. There is some conditional logic in the Bookends format routines, but not the degree you are asking for (you could actually have the open paren omitted by putting it in between $ signs, but not the closing paren). You'll need to create a new Type: 'Book Chapter no volume'...
