Help syncing Bookends via Dropbox?

Post by el_spumante »

I am having trouble syncing my Bookends library via Dropbox. I have read the information in the User Guide and on this forum (thanks!) and determined that for my situation (i.e., single user who wants to be able to modify Bookends library on home computer and office computer) that the easiest solution was to put my library in Dropbox. I have also moved my attachments into Dropbox and can view them on both computers. But, I am having a problem.

I have been able to open the library on both computers (making sure to close the library and Bookends on one computer before opening it on the other computer), but each time I open the library after editing on the other computer I get an error message that suggesting I rebuild the library. I have tried canceling that message AND rebuilding the library, but I cannot tell the difference. Any ideas why the error message? And is it safe to simply ignore it or do I need to rebuild the library each time?

Many thanks for your advice. I've been a big fan (and advocate) of Bookends for years but only recently began using it on two computers. I would really like to make this work.

I'm not sure what the problem is, but I'd delete the library from one computer and Rebuild it on the other (then let it sync with the other computer). It sounds like one of the libraries is damaged.

Thanks for the prompt reply, Jon.

But, I'm not sure I understand your suggestion, or how it would work. Just so I am clear: I only have one Bookends library, saved on Dropbox, which I am trying to open on two computers (though not at the same time). Deleting the library from Dropbox would delete it completely; it's not syncing with another library on either or each computer.

DropBox creates a copy of the library on the remote computer, so you have two copies of the library (one on each Mac). So remove the database from the DropBox folder on one Mac, Rebuild it, and put it back. Now that version will be uploaded to the DropBox server and downloaded on the other Mac.
