Hi

I am considering to switch from Papers to Bookends, and I got the demo version to work fine on one Macbook. I created a folder 'Bookends' on my Dropbox which contains my library, library1.bdb. I set the Attachments folder to my Dropbox 'Bookends' folder in Preferences. I physically moved the Bookends Attachments folder to the Dropbox 'Bookends' folder.

However I cannot find out how to access the Bookends library when running on a different Macbook and accessing the Dropbox folder. Again I set the Attachments folder to the correct path in Preferences.

Is it possible to share the Bookends database across Dropbox?

Thanks
Paul

It sounds like you're doing everything correctly. Remember that you have to wait for Dropbox to sync the two folders, which the first time you do this can take some time if you have many PDFs in the attachments folder. Once synced, Bookends on the second MacBook should find the attachments without issue.

If you find this isn't working for you for some reason, please contact tech support directly and we'll work through it (support@sonnysoftware.com).

Thanks. Yes I am definitely allowing sync to complete. I have Dropbox-based databases for The Hit List, Thunderbird, Papers etc and I am always careful about letting sync complete when transitioning between devices (based on earlier grisly experiences). Anyway it is helpful to know that it should work - I will clean everything out and try again from scratch. Thanks for the support email address and I will be in contact if I cannot make progress.

By the way, I used the Papers export function to move pdfs into Bookends. Might that be part of the problem and is there any recommended method to migrate from Papers 1 to Bookends?

As long as the PDFs are in the right place and Bookends knows where that place is, it should work.

Ah, from Papers 1. There is an option in Papers 1 (File menu) to export directly to Bookends. Did you try that? If you did PDF attachment names should be preserved (or if you exported/imported as EndNote XML). If you did it some other way (e.g. export/import RIS) the attachment names wouldn't transfer.

If you haven't seen it, this page tells you how to transfer from a variety of reference managers to Bookends.
