Feature Request/Question: PDF Annotation and Page #
Feature Request/Question: PDF Annotation and Page #
One of the features that has become indispensable to me is the ability to transfer highlights from a PDF ("PDF Annotations") to the Bookends note stream. The option to include the page number would make this even better for generating citations, but from what I can tell the software uses the "absolute" number of the PDF document (i.e., if it is the 4th page of the PDF, it outputs "@4"). Most journal articles don't start on "1" (and also often include some kind of extra title page) so these numbers then have to be corrected. Is there a way to input a starting number so that I can obtain the correct output without manually correcting all the page numbers?
Re: Feature Request/Question: PDF Annotation and Page #
Unfortunately, no. Bookends uses a PDFKit API query to find the page number and uses the result. Some publishers do put the correct page number (from the journal), many don't. To my knowledge there is no other way to obtain the page number (meaning that the PDF is just text, page numbers are metadata created by the app that makes the PDF).

On this note, the only way I've found of changing the metadata that controls page numbers for a PDF, in order to get the 'real' numbers displayed (which is particularly helpful in Skim) is through Adobe Acrobat Pro (I have an old version). So that might help you. If anyone knows of a way that doesn’t involve Adobe I'm sure that would be helpful too.

Thank you both for your replies - I do have Acrobat Pro, so I will try taja's suggestion.
