Setting up Attachments with iOS and macOS

Post by peterrich »

Like many on here, I'm a long time Sente user. Even having been discontinued last year, it still kept working beautifully until just recently. In researching other reference managers, Bookends seems to be the closest to Sente in the features that matter most to me: tagging, pdf editing and ios syncing. Unfortunately, though I was able to set up my db and sync it in both the iOS and the macOS versions, the attachments do not appear in iOS, which is a huge drawback for me. I have tried quitting, syncing, resetting, and all that jazz, but with no luck. I've downloaded the helper app discussed in a similar post (see viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4179&p=19754&hilit= ... ios#p19754). While that app forced iCloud to create a Bookends folder and placed a test file in the folder, that's the only file that ended up in that folder. I can't seem to get my attachments to sync so that I have them on both my desktop and mobile versions. Any ideas?

Serge should join this discussion tomorrow. You didn't say, though whether you moved your attachments to the new iCloud folder created by Bookends for iOS, and if you pointed Bookends to it in preferences. I'm guessing yes if you can sync them between Bookends for Mac, but i want to be sure.

@Jon, yup, I pointed to the iCloud folder in preferences, but upon checking, the attachments hadn't been moved there. So, I logged in to iCloud online and uploaded them myself. Once that was done, I was able to see the attachments in Bookends for iOS.

My biggest complaint at this point is that Bookends hangs A LOT. I also can't find a pattern as to what is making it hang other than just interacting with it. What causes the hanging in one instance (e.g., attaching a .pdf to a specific reference) will work after I force quit and reboot. But then something else causes it to hang again (e.g, moving a folder, updating a reference). I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Bookends. I currently only have 29 references in my library, as I'm testing things out, so I don't think that the # of references is the problem. Any ideas how I might fix this?

I'm currently running OS X 10.12.6 on a 2016 MBP.

You have to move the attachments to the attachment folder yourself (in the Finder). Once there Bookends will sync them.

Are you using Sierra? If so, please see this thread

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4365

Upgrading to High Sierra will stop the hangs.
