I have to apologise for my fuzzy topic, English is not my first language and I can't find the right term.
Here's what I'm about: Sometimes famous people write books, usually memoirs. Only they don't actually write the book, they jot down or dictate their memories and have a real author turn them into a real book.
If the famous person (or their publisher) isn't too shabby, they put the name of the writing craftman in the book too, like "by FP, with WC".
What is the easiest way to get that "with" into a Bookends citation? It would work with a customisable field, I think. But I'd like it to be simpler and work like a backslashed word like "\passim" in the page range. Like this:

Re: How to seperate author and co-author
No, that won't work. You're right, you put the name in a user field. If you do, in the format you'd place an asterisk after the user field identifier so Bookends treats it as a name.
For example, if the co-author is in User1, in the format you'd output it with
u1*
This format sequence
a, $with $u1*
Depending on your format's settings, that would output something like
Michael Imperioli and Steve Schirripa, with Philip Lermann
Jon

Re: How to seperate author and co-author
Thank you very much.
Surprisingly, this is the first time I have ever needed such a citation, and I have been a (happy!) Bookends user since at least version 9.

Re: How to seperate author and co-author
There is one more idea I had that may or may not be useful.
If you add a comma after a name, Bookends will output it as entered. Depending on the format you use, this might do what you want:
Imperioli, Michael
Schirripa, Steve
, with Lermann, Philip,
If that looks like it might be useful but you need help configuring the format to output exactly as you like, post what you want the final appearance to be and I'll show you how to achieve it.

P.S. Thanks for being a Bookends user for so long -- it's come a long way since v9, and it will continue to improve.

Re: How to seperate author and co-author
Thank you again, I will look into that.
There is no specific output format at the moment. I simply use Bookends temporary citations for every quote from every text I read. These quotes may end up in a text, and I will use whatever format I prefer at the time, or, more likely, whatever the publisher requires. Or they will just remain part of my ever-growing pool of citations—properly referenced citations, that is, thanks to Bookends.
I bought Bookends in a bundle with Mellel in 2007, shortly after switching to the Mac platform. Unfortunately, Mellel and I had to part because it is too much of an island. Unlike Bookends, which connects all my writing applications. So when I had to renew my licence a few weeks ago, it took me no longer than hitting the Floating Citation shortcut. I just thought: Oh, is it another two years?
